It's February .....

Today was our February GTG at OFBC.
There were eight of us there and we managed to make an impact on the number of vanilla slices in the coffee shop!

 

Here is our visitor and hopefully new member Kerrie Metcalfe.
Kerrie came along today to check us out - she is an embroiderer and quilter from Albion Park. Here is 'Kerries Quilt' which she put together over the last holidays. It was made from a jelly roll that she picked up for half price and the wadding was joined with iron on tape - my kind of quilt!

 

Margaret showed us the progress she is making with her Sue Daley quilt. She has to make 879 clamshells and 224 -1 1/2"squares to complete the quilt which will be then be appliqued onto a backing.

 

It's done in Aunt Grace fabrics and will resemble a Double Wedding Ring.

 

Behind this little 'Taggy' quilt is Helen - it's lined with a suedy fleece - really cuddly and the ribbons are all very tactile too - her little grandaughter loves it!

 

Magaret has finished the top of Lilly's quilt. Neat eh? it's so soft and pretty.

Helen was working on a UFO - from One of Nic Bridges' classes - "Four Seasons".

 

Our Challenge this month was to create a 'Vibrator' quilt to go under our lunch buzzers. Here they are .... which one will be judged the WINNER?

Our first GTG for 2012 at OFBC

It's our first meeting of 2012 and we are in a new venue.
We are now meeting at Oak Flats Bowling Club so all Scquilters are invited to attend if you are down our way on the third Saturday of the month.
Here we are all set up and 'working' in the coffee lounge at the Club.

 

Trish is working on her 'Moon' quilt.

Margaret our handsewing guru is cross stitching a block for a quilt her latest granddaughter Lily.

And Helen is making heaps of 'diamond stars'.......


Robyn is making 'clamshells' don't they look pretty?


And Stephanie was pretending to sew these together - I did get four done!

Then it was lunchtime!
I won't tell you about the 'fight' over the last Vanilla Slice - it did end amicably with it being shared!

Stephanie had to start on the cheesecake before her 'main' arrived.
Now - do you see the red Boomerang 'vibrator'?(the mind boggles!)
It tells you when your meal is ready.
Following in the tradition of the Sydneysiders at the 'Bluegum', our challenge for next month's meeting is to make a quilt to go under it to stop it 'dancing' all over the table. It's dimensions are 2 1/2x 5 1/2 inches.

Show and Tell

Margaret has over achieved again - check out the embroidered border!
It looks very cute.

Robyn B is making a crochet blanket for a grandson - has trebled the 'backing' and is now doing long rows of chains to weave in and out the trebles. Very warm and prized for camping I'm told.

Stephanie has made a bright baby ring cushion for a member of her chorus who has just had a babe. She hopes he will enjoy the music fabric as he sits and listens to his mother practicing her songs!
We hope to see some new faces as we meet each month at the club.
We start around 10am and finish around 3pm - we just have to remember to order lunches before the bingo people!

Christmas 2011 (in January 2012)

Can you believe I haven't posted since last Christmas?
Doesn't time fly?
I promise to be better this year and we'll keep a record of our GTG's at OFBC!
Robyn W gave us a challenge for our Christmas GTG of making or bringing a useful article that was recycled.
Here they are.

 

Helen is accosting Maureen with her recycled 'Mission brown' curtain rod which she is sure would make a good quilt hanger!
On the left, we have Trish's button broach ( surprise it's black and red!)
Lucy's folded Christmas tree which she completed on the day.
Steph's wreath created from recycled CANTEEN bandanas on a wire coathanger and Vixen and Prancer made from Coke cans and champagne corks - definitely recycled.
Now I think the scoop was Margaret's but I can't remember the story of the 'bust' :-)

 

Next we have Robyn W's detergent dispenser - very useful by the sink!
And Cinzia was recycling yarn from an old jumper for this knitted creation.
Robyn B's crochet hat from recycled shopping bags only made it to 'coaster' size - but the it could be classed as a UFO while the tinselled creation beside it was Maureen's handpainted and punched peach tin tealight holder.
I think the Christmas bag which held a Secret Santa gift was also many times recycled.
Have I forgotten anyone?

The table looked so festive - once again Robyn invited us along to her lovely home which was dressed up so beautifully for Christmas. It was a nice surprise to see along Janine too - she is still preparing for her move to the 'West'.

And here we are suveying the table prior to eating - it was a lovely feast and Christmas get together as well.

Christmas at Robyn's ....

 

We had our Christmas GTG at Robyn's 'on the hill' last Saturday before the rain!
It wasn't a clear day but very pleasant and warm enough to decide to stay inside.
Robyn had decorated beautifully and we had a lovely time chatting around the dining table and sharing a meal. Daughter Catherine excelled herself with creating some lovely salads and sweets that Robyn shared with us - thank you Catherine!
It was nice to meet Trish Copeland who brought along some nice wild hibiscus flowers which we added to our champers - yummo. I remembered that there was someone on the retreat list who was allergic to strawberries - guess who that was? yes it was Trish.
Check out our cute coffee 'cosies' - four of us made them, they were all different and everyone was happy with their mystery swap. Mine, thank you Trish is sitting on a Maccas cup on my bookcase - can't wait to really use it!
Doris has been bust with her embroidery machine - well done Doris, great bag and Christmas wall hanging.
I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and that we can all get together with enthusiasm in 2011 as we approach the Kiama Retreat.

This months GTG at Helens

We had a nice GT at Helen's in Dapto on Sunday.
Lucy, Jan, Jana, Robyn and Helen were all busily working on the luggage tags when I arrived late. I felt a bit useful by bring a glue stick!

We at last got around to exchanging our blue and orange bulls eyes - this was due in July - well thats just 3 months late.


We could have waited for your return Robyn B! We have both done extra's so I might do an extra exchnge with just ours eh? Now where did I put them - that's a worry.
Now we have another UFO .... Jana has a plan for hers.

GTG with a purpose ....

A goodly number of us had a nice productive time at Cheryl's shop today sewing a raffle quilt. It was a pleasure to welcome three visitors. Helen from Dapto, Judy a friend of Lorraine's who lives at Oak Flats and Narelle who works at the shop.
It was good to have our Sydney friends too - Lorraine, Lillian and Theresa.

 

Here we are all at work on our Dresden plates.
Note what a great ironer Doris is!
She ironed ALL day.
Judy was a great 'turner' as was Helen - we introduced them to the group and put them to work straight away. Jana came by for a while to assist and gave us some expert advice - it was nice to catch up with her too.

 

Here is the end product so far. We managed 20 'plates' today and have not made a decision yet on the size of the finished quilt. We decided on a lemon fabric for the background and we think it will be sashed with scrappy 2" strips in a collection of the fabrics used in the plates. Good on Lorraine who took home fabrics to do the sashes (I think).
Next month we will continue the project and hopefully get it finished.
It was decided that, as the fourth Sunday next month is Anzac Day, that we would meet on the Saturday.
It will be another sewing day at the shop starting at 11am.
